Personal Branding – The Three W’s

Monday, April 27th, 2009

personal-brandingTo get ahead in today’s corporate world, you have to market yourself to others. The first and most important way to do this is through branding.

Your brand should be reflected in a 15 to 30 second introduction of yourself that tells someone:

1.    Who you are
2.    What is your area of expertise
3.    Where is the value your expertise adds to your company

For example, here’s my introduction:

“My name is Maurice Gilbert of Conselium, a search firm specializing in financial services professionals. I help companies hire the best financial professionals in the audit, accounting, finance and IT security fields faster and cheaper than they could do it on their own.”

Attitude: A Key to Career Success - Part 2

Friday, March 13th, 2009

This is part two of the attitudes to lead to success in the workplace. Last month I gave you the first five attitudes for success. This week I will give you the last five of Dr. Martin Seligman’s ways to have a successful attitude in the workplace. successman

1. Believe that it’s not who you know, but who knows you. Successful workers understand the importance of networking within and outside the office. You will need help to accomplish your career goals.

2. Constantly ask yourself, what else can I do? Look for ways to improve your professional skill sets….this makes you more marketable.

3. Believe failure will help you succeed. Failure is just feedback. Successful people learn from their mistakes and move on.

4. Remember that you are your biggest fan. Talk about your accomplishments and what you’ve done for the company. Don’t assume that people know.

5. Always have your opportunity monitor turned on. Keep your eyes open to new opportunities. You never know when an opportunity can change the course of your life.

Attitude: A Key to Career Success - Part 1

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

This is the first in a two part series on Attitude. Dr. Martin Seligman, an authority on optimism, discovered that attitude was a better predictor of success than I.Q., education, and other factors. Adopt the following attitudes to lead to success in the workplace.attitude-performance

1. Believe that you are in charge of your destiny. Successful professionals go out and make good things happen they don’t wait for things to happen.

2. Believe that anything is possible. As the saying goes, “whether you think you can or think you cannot you’re right”.

3. Do even the small tasks well. You never know when you will be noticed so take pride in everything you do.

4. Believe everyone is a potential key contact. Be professional, courteous and take interest in people around you. You never know when your past contacts will play a role in your future.

5. Stay enthusiastic about your present job. It may not be your dream job but your enthusiasm and top performance will provide other options.

Part two of this series will be published later this week.
