4 Signs You are Showing Your Arrogance

By September 5, 2013 No Comments

A problem many bosses have (maybe you?) is a tendency toward arrogance. Intentional or not — it’s a problem. Here are four ways to tell if your arrogance is showing.

 1. Talking down to employees. Try to take note of how you talk when you are talking to or referring to your employees. Do you use phrases that insinuate that they are inferior to you or others that are in positions of authority? It doesn’t always have to be what you say that can be arrogant or demeaning — sometimes it’s just the way you say it.

 2. Constantly challenging employees’ ideas. When an employee comes to you with a new idea or project, do you disregard the idea? Do you come up with reasons why the ideas wouldn’t work or why they are not good enough? There are managers that are not open to taking new ideas from their employees because they don’t believe that they are intelligent enough to come up with good ideas or projects. What you should remember is that these employees are part of your team for a reason though, and they have the skills to do the job.

 3. Displaying a lack of trust. Are you constantly checking your employees’ assignments for even the smallest of errors? Don’t act like your employees haven’t been trained (You did train them, didn’t you?). They were hired for a reason, so treat them as such. A lack of trust in your employees only causes you more work and stress.

 4. Overstating your title. Ever met someone who is always reminding you of what title they hold? (“I have a PhD” or “I’m the manager”) It’s annoying.  Your workers know your position’s title and status, so knock it off.
