When it comes to implementing strategies for successful employee retention, there are a wide variety of techniques, tactics, policies, and systems that employers must take into consideration if they are to develop a culture and environment designed to ensure that their employees are kept both satisfied and motivated. One important tactic which employers should seek to promote in the workplace is interoffice competition. An individual’s competitive drive can be a strong tool in the upkeep of morale and their motivation to strive for success. Not only can such an atmosphere effectively help to drive the success of a company’s employees, and the company itself in turn, but the creation of such a cultural tone can aid in the executive search and hiring strategy to attract like-minded and competitive individuals whose presence will serve to further drive the growth and success of the organization.

However, in order for employers to develop an environment capable of successfully driving competition amongst their employees to keep them motivated, and yet not taking this strategy too far, there are a few techniques that companies should seek to apply, here outlined by executive search firms.

First, employers will need to come to recognize the fundamental importance of having the right attitude in order for these strategies to be successful. While building a team of individuals who possess the right attitude is a sure formula for success, on the other hand, it can take just one employee with a bad attitude to throw off the balance and drive of a whole team and damage their motivation and morale. Employees with the necessary attitude will be able to successfully set their own goals, share these goals with their team members, and stay focused and driven to the success of these goals. Periodic team meetings should be used as a time for employees to share these goals, their progress and successes with one another. This will allow members of a team to keep track of one another and compete with one another as they strive to meet their individual goals. Promoting ambition and boldness among employees is an important strategy in driving employees’ competitive natures.

Next, one of the most commonly cited requirements of any good employee retention strategy is the need to provide employees with detailed and productive feedback, and this is all the more true in a competition oriented environment where it will be necessary for employees to be able to track their own progress and development as well as that of their team members. Here it is important that employers identify and highlight those successes which are serving to move the company forward in its own goals and acknowledge these important achievements and those striving for them. This is such an important duty that it is hard to overdo it, particularly given the significance of positive reinforcement. Building on this point, it is also crucial that employers seek to reward the achievements of those employees who are continually working hard and driving for success. When other see that this or that individual is being recognized and rewarded in a competitive environment then it is sure to spark their own drive for success.
