St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital studies and treats catastrophic diseases in children, especially pediatric cancers. The hospital only has about 60 beds as most of the nearly 5,000 children it treats annually are seen on an outpatient basis, as part of the hospital’s research efforts into finding cures and more effective treatments. St. Jude not only helps kiddos with their health, but it also helps out their parents: The organization pays all expenses not covered by insurance, and patients without insurance don’t have to pay. Entertainer Danny Thomas founded St. Jude in 1962; Thomas also founded the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC), the fundraising organization for the hospital.
