How to Define Modern Leaders

By August 2, 2013 No Comments

Are leaders actually defined by their positions anymore? Not according to a survey by the American Management Association. Nowadays, leaders are becoming increasingly defined by their amount of influence and performance, says the HR Canadian Reporter

The conducted survey found that the highest percent of individuals surveyed answered that a leader is “Anyone whose role allows them to influence a group, regardless of direct reporting relationships.” By contrast, the lowest percent of individuals surveyed answered that a leader is “Anyone who is in a position that is designated “critical” to our company.”

And that’s probably a good thing. People who have desirable business traits, such as good communication skills, flexibility, and open-mindedness can be seen as leaders, even if they aren’t necessarily in a top-tier position. Imagine how much good would come out of putting those people into real leadership positions.
